A cherished tradition, the annual Cathedral Service was held today at the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne.
Secondary students and staff gathered for a morning of reflection, connection, and celebration.
This year’s theme was ‘Belief’ and we were fortunate to have Reverend Andrew Stewart join us, speaking of the many ways in which we learn about belief.
St Paul’s Cathedral was filled with the joy of music and singing from our talented students.

Congratulations to the five Tintern Grammar students who were recently awarded the 2025 Kelson Music Scholar Awards and the Penelope Thwaites Music Awards. With special thanks to the Kelson family, represented by Kate Butterworth in Assembly on Friday, who endow these annual encouragement scholarships in support of students’ music tuition.
There are four categories to which the following students received awards:
* Outstanding senior performer – Sebastian (Year 11) on piano
* Outstanding performance of an Australian composition – Tiaa (Year 5) on violin
* Music encouragement awards for desirable instruments – Ines (Year 9) on harp and Meike (Year 6) on euphonium
* Best original composition – Ray (Year 7) on violin and trombone
Tintern Grammar Music Director Ilma Kelson 1958-73 supported and encouraged young performers by arranging performances and touring opportunities for the School choirs throughout country Victoria and Europe. Outside Tintern, she actively fostered the development of young performers through music awards programs with the University of Melbourne. The Penelope Thwaites Music Scholar Awards were initiated by Michael Kelson in honour of world-renowned pianist and composer Penelope Thwaites AM, who was a student at Tintern when his mother was director of music.
These awards are a legacy of Ilma Kelson’s energetic drive and high expectations of what young musicians can achieve. May they continue to enrich and encourage students in their pursuit of excellence.

Today, the whole school came together for a smoking ceremony performed by Murrundindi, Head Man and Elder of the Wurrundjeri tribe, as part of Reconciliation Week celebrations.
In his introduction, Murrundindi spoke of the significance of the traditional smoking ceremony tree used by the old people called the Native Cherry Ballart. He took delight in the unseasonal fruit on the branches he sourced from the hills around Healesville. Their presence being symbolic of a year ahead with plentiful food supply.
Keep an eye out for these significant trees in the landscaped gardens on campus the next time you visit!

Last week, Clinical Psychologist and Family Therapist Andrew Fuller, spoke to Tintern Grammar parents about how to create confident and capable learners.
He outlined the types of personalities parents are likely to see in their children, from negotiators to passive resistors with tips on how to respond to each.
In order to learn, he said it is vital that children be in a ‘have a go mindset’ and he shared tips on how to optimise that state of mind. Most importantly, he described the importance of asking questions. That as a parent, the most powerful word is ‘what’ rather than ‘why’.
If you missed the session, the best way to get up to speed is to visit mylearningstrengths.com to discover your child’s learning type.
Thanks to Andrew for his continued support of Tintern families for over 16 years!
