Congratulations to Tintern Grammar teachers, Emily Mars and Alex Pitcher who have been selected for Independent Schools Victoria's (ISV) Teacher Fellowship Program.
Participation in this Fellowship provides an invaluable opportunity for these teachers to explore innovative approaches to reporting and assessment. Importantly for Tintern, this initiative aligns with Cultures of Thinking principles, particularly in how it creates a culture where students actively engage in assessment as a learning process rather than a passive outcome.
Emily Mars is a STEAM Teacher (Prep – Year 6), Library Teacher (Prep to Year 2), Cultures of Thinking (JS and ELC Coordinator), Professional Growth Partnership (PGP) coach and VIT mentor. On being selected for the Fellowship, Emily commented that ‘providing students with greater voice in feedback not only enhances their metacognitive skills but also fosters intrinsic motivation and a deeper understanding of their learning goals’.
Secondary Teacher of English and History, Alex Pitcher said he decided to apply for the ISV Teacher Fellowship Program after several professional conversations on return from long-service leave. Commenting that he was ‘looking for a challenge that could push him and help him learn extra skills for the next step in his teaching career.’
Jason McManus, Deputy Principal acknowledges the strategic value to the School with participation in the Fellowship, commenting ‘as part of our Forward Strategy, Tintern has some big-ticket strategic goals for learning. With Emily focussing on growing our Cultures of Thinking and Alex's initiatives at Year 9, their work will help contribute towards realising these goals.’

Year 10 Tintern Grammar History students recently had the opportunity to engage with living history on a visit to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. There, they met a relative of Year 10 student Ashleigh, Guta Goldstein—a survivor of the Lodz Ghetto and the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Movingly, Guta spoke to students about her experiences surviving Nazi rule as a young Jewish girl, and of never losing hope, even after losing family.
The excursion formed part of a unit on the rise of fascism in Europe and the Holocaust, with Guta’s powerful story providing a new and more personalised perspective on a devastating moment in time. This incredible opportunity to have a conversation with a Holocaust survivor and relative of a Tintern student, enabled emphatic engagement with a topic in history that may otherwise feel overwhelmingly large.
Utterly captivated by Guta’s story of survival, students followed with insightful questions. Specifically, they wanted to grasp how she could possibly hold on after her last remaining family members were taken away, how she handled the years following the war, and what she wished she could have done had her pre-teen years not been impacted by Nazi invasion.
With very special thanks to Guta Goldstein for sharing her survival story and to Ashleigh’s father, Jared for helping to coordinate this unforgettable exchange.

Golden Circle High Tea Reunion—a day to remember
Last week, we had the privilege of welcoming back Tintern Grammar's Golden Circle Alumnae—those who graduated 50 or more years ago—for a special celebration of their lasting connection to Tintern.
It was a delightful day filled with shared memories, laughter, and stories spanning decades. A special moment was taking the time to congratulate the Class of 1975 on reaching this milestone and officially joining the Golden Circle. We were also delighted to welcome our oldest attending Alumna, Mary Churchward (Class of 1948), whose presence was a wonderful reminder of the rich history and enduring bonds within our community.
A highlight of the day was the Junior Bel Canto Choir’s rousing rendition of Factis Non Verbis, which filled the room with spirit and pride, reminding us all of the school’s enduring motto—
'Deeds, Not Words'.
Guests enjoyed a beautiful High Tea, reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. As the event drew to a close, many stayed to continue conversations over coffee, reminiscing about their school days and reflecting on the legacy they’ve helped build.
Thank you to all who attended—your presence made this event truly special. We look forward to seeing you again at future reunions and celebrations!
