The VCE Biology labs have been a hive of activity as our Unit 3 & 4 students undertake their Outcome 3 scientific investigations. This requires students to design, conduct and report on an investigation. This year we have chosen to explore the activity of catalase – an enzyme involved in the breakdown of a harmful metabolic product. Catalase can be sourced from several sources including the humble potato as well as liver tissue. Catalase produces oxygen which we can measure to determine how active the enzyme is under different conditions.

Students have selected their own conditions to investigate such as temperature, substrate concentration and pH. In the design and conduct of their experiments students adhere to the appropriate scientific method and employ the principles of good experimental design. Students complete logbooks and checkpoint assessments toward presenting their findings in a scientific poster.
