Under the guidance and support of Tintern’s dedicated teaching staff, of the Class of 2024 students who sat for VCE examinations:
• 10% achieved an ATAR above 99, placing them in the top 1% nationally (2023 – 4%)
• 21% achieved an ATAR above 95, placing them in the top 5% nationally (2023 – 22%)
• 40% achieved an ATAR above 90, placing them in the top 10% (2023 – 33%)
• 66% achieved an ATAR above 80, placing them in the top 20% (2023 – 55%)
• The highest study score achieved this year was 50, achieved in three subjects: Specialist Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, and Creative Digital Media. For each of these students, this result is within the top 0.3% of students enrolled in the subject.

Congratulations to this year’s overall Dux Ethan Zhou who achieved an ATAR of 99.85, and to our International Dux, Patrick Shao, who achieved an ATAR of 99.5.
This is the fourth consecutive year that there has been strong growth in our median ATAR and median study score. This year’s median ATAR is 87 (up from 85 in 2023), meaning that half of our students are in the top 13% nationally. Also of note, this year’s median study score is 34 (up from 33 in 2023).

We are very pleased that our students have achieved so well as a cohort. While much focus will inevitably (and appropriately) fall on our highest achievers, the results for the whole year level are very impressive and are either close to, or are, Tintern’s best ever. Every student in the Class of 2024 who committed to achieving their personal best is to be commended. They have each taken their own path, on a shared educational journey, marked by the development of character, growth and achievement. As change-makers and custodians of our future, and with the compass as their guide, these graduates leave Tintern Grammar full of hope and opportunity, prepared to live a life of purpose and meaning.

‘Being 2023 School Captain was an honour and a really rewarding experience. This privilege and opportunity allowed me to continue to develop a multitude of skills in communication, teamwork, organisation, public speaking and problem solving.

With a love of sport and as a member of the Senior Boys Football Team, he won the Pinnacle Award for Commitment to Sport.

‘Leadership is a really important skill to have in life. I am very thankful for the opportunity to be School Captain, it helped me constantly practise and progress my leadership skills. I feel so much more confident in my ability to speak calmly, fluently and to go off track from what the script says.

For life beyond Year 12, I’m still deciding what course to study, the University I’d like to go to, and where my life is headed, however, I know that no matter what happens, I’ll be fine. I am living in the moment and embracing the opportunities and experiences that are everywhere’.

She showed strong leadership as the 2023 International Captain and won the 2023 International Student Award.

‘The care I received at Tintern, improved my motivation to study. My teachers always encouraged me to ask questions, taking every question I asked seriously and patiently helping me.

Studying in a group of friends can reduce stress and improve study efficiency. The classmates in my study group ignited my enthusiasm for a love of learning.

‘Tintern’s Parallel Learning model really helped me to develop a sense of community belonging and self-confidence. In Middle School the boys shared interests and learning styles that helped us explore and discover our passions and interests from a young age. As a Year 12 Student Leader, Ellena built her time management skills, made strong friendships and many long-lasting memories.

‘Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?’

A fresh start can commence with a new term, of course, when we all generally feel invigorated on that first morning back, but that fresh start can commence any day for any of us. Here are five ways to let go and choose to start each day fresh:

1. Everyday with the many personalities we encounter, a number of factors can influence how we act and react to any given situation, so the same situation tomorrow may impact us differently depending on how we woke up, went to sleep or any number of things that may have happened on the way to school. We need to keep things in perspective.
2. Holding on to something that didn’t serve us well the first time will likely stunt forward movement and also potentially harm us in ways that aren’t always evident immediately – it takes an enormous effort that just wastes energy and there are far more productive ways to spend our time. We must focus forward and see the best in each situation, at least after we sleep on it if we couldn’t see it right away. Distance from a situation always makes it easier to recognize.
3. Being positive and finding the moments we can hold on to that fill us with good feelings promotes the longevity of our careers. If we hold on to every altercation or challenging moment, we’d burn out almost immediately. Sending an affirmation to a colleague, re-read cards from old students or colleagues as a reminder as to why we do what we do. Making an impact on even one other person’s life is enough to reset the clock sometimes.
4. New days promote new perspective and perhaps what wasn’t clear yesterday, will be today. There are endless possibilities at the beginning of each new day, so choose to look at things from a different angle. This can promote creativity and help us move forward in more innovative ways.
5. Try to make positive presuppositions – assume intentions are good. When we approach situations from the positive, we create a healthier learning environment for everyone and ultimately a safer one too.

So why not try approaching each day like a blank sheet ready to become the next masterpiece because that day may just be today? This too is part of the excitement of education – the hope it brings to every one of us.

Tintern Grammar

Max studied Specialist Mathematics, Physics, Legal Studies, Chinese Second Language and English Language in his final year of school. Accelerating in Year 10 both Mathematical Methods and Legal Studies formed study habits that led to Max’s success.

‘The benefits of accelerating subjects was highly reassuring and motivating. It reinforced the importance of a studious, steadfast mindset in senior study, and equally raised my self-confidence, showing me how diligent studying can bring about academic success.

As a Student Leader my teamwork and planning skills really developed. I felt a real sense of fulfilment through working in a team and combining different members’ strengths to create successful events such as assemblies and the Tintern Colour Run.

School Leaders can really play a major part as role models for younger students and as public representatives of Tintern Grammar.’

Top Class is an annual concert series co-ordinated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) showcasing outstanding performances by VCE and VCE VET performing arts students from schools across the state. Selected performers exemplify the skill and creativity that can be achieved within the VCE curriculum.

This year, 95 top performing students were invited to audition for Top Class Theatre Studies, and only 25 students were selected to perform.

Emily will be performing her 2023 Theatre Studies monologue Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical – Trunchbull at Top Class Theatre Studies on Friday 19 April.

Lachlan will be performing his 2023 Theatre Studies monologue Paradise – Philoctetes at Top Class Theatre Studies on Monday 22 April.

This year, 102 top performing students were invited to audition for Top Class Drama, and only 25 students were selected to perform.

Natasha will be performing her 2023 Drama solo The Court Attendant at Top Class Drama on Monday 22 April.
