Friends of Music Jazz Night
On the evening of Saturday 12 May, students from all year levels were “Puttin’ on the Ritz” and made their way over to the CM Wood Centre for Tintern’s Annual Jazz Night. The hall was resplendent in its burgundy, gold and black theme, where dedicated volunteers from Friends of Music and a team of students had worked to create a wonderful atmosphere, down to the very last placemat.
Before formal proceedings got underway, some prelude music set the mood for what was to come. This was provided by Craig Bonnington and his dad, Paul, the Senior Jazz Combo and the Year 10 quartet, ‘Silver Lining’.
Featuring performances from “crooning” Tintern choirs and “swinging” jazz bands, the evening was made complete with the Lightning Jazz Band – who knew just how to get everyone on the dance floor, regardless of their dancing skills! Some of the songs performed by the choirs included “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” and “Lullaby of Broadway”. Jazz Night also showcased students trying out improvisation in their instrumental performances, and talented solo singers.
The night was a perfect opportunity for students, families and staff alike to get dressed up and have a good time. The CM Wood was constantly filled with laughter and conversation – and, of course, the incredible music. Towards the end of Jazz Night, several students were recognised for their commitment and development in Jazz music at Tintern. Congratulations to Alec Chen, Millie Kenny, Charlie Victoria and Myles Carew for their achievements.
2018’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz” was a hugely enjoyable evening for all members of the school to came together, celebrating jazz and the music students who make our Tintern community such a vibrant place.
